The changes aren't that big to impact their customers. Also, I liked when the fox was looking at the globe but that is irrelevant to be honest. I like the blue better than the purple, but in the cholor scheme it makes sense why change go for the purple. Same can be said for firefox focus, which has a different color scheme. It still represents the fox around the globe, so any average user still will recognize it and should not have any problem with it. Might be hard to promote the company when people often think "isn't that a browser?". I think they are trying to get the Mozilla(company) logo to be more relevant, rather than upgrading their Firefox logo. Google and chrome for example, both logos are different and only share the color scheme Youtube have changed their logo in the past too, but it is still recognizable. I may be overestimating the coolness of my own ideas, though.Different brand or company logos, and product logos is a very common practice. :) At some point, something looks so cool that it doesn't matter what it symbolizes (Within reason- there are certain things that should never be symbolized no matter how cool they look, but this isn't one of them). To be honest, even if they didn't include a letter, but did all the other stuff suggested in the second paragraph, the menacing cool factor of the logo would be so great as to make it matter less that people still wouldn't know what it was or what it represented. Additionally (Even as a static icon), they could have the ball shape altered to what a squeezed ball looks like, and show the fox flexing a bit to make it look like the fox is squeezing the ball while illuminating, burning, and scorching it. If any operating systems support animated icons (Or they wanted to have an optional toolbar throbber hidden away under "customize"), they could have the fire expand and recede like an ocean tide. Maybe they could put a "C" or a "G" on the ball, and have the flames spreading from the fox over the ball, illuminating it, burning it, and leaving scorch marks at the edge of the flames. If something is such an inside joke that it still seems puzzling after it's explained, they should probably step up the obviousness of it or remove it from the design IMO. :) ).Īs things stand, if the ball is meant to be Chrome, I'm going to have to say that it is very non-obvious. Maybe they could even have the logo at the top of the page as their default logo, and include options for a classic logo as an easter egg of some sort (Maybe something like "about:classic" would show both logos and a toggle switch. Personally, I've always wanted to just have a cartoon fox with wayfarer sunglasses on looking at the user head-on as the logo, but I have a feeling no one else does. I think both the retro-cool original and the move forward both make sense in different ways. I would love to either see a full return to the classic logo (Before there was even that shiny reflection on the planet) or a move forward to something like this. Some elements don't make sense anymore for anyone approaching them without a reference point. It feels transitional, like they've started morphing and subbing out elements and it now only makes sense if you know where it came from (and perhaps if one somehow knew where it was going). You know, the logo missing it's planet- first making it a blue ball, then making it a purple ball- and it's missing it's fox paw, and the fox body is basically fire, etc. Minimalist logo leaves a strong impression on audiences with clean & simple sketches. I feel like the current icon, while not bad looking, is stuck between the cooler legacy icons and the potentially cool future icons like the one above. You can't really seem the elements of the current logo very well on some screens- that fox head in the OP's logo would be visible from space, which is probably what you want branding wise. At minimum, this is absolutely what a mobile icon for Firefox would look like if they started from scratch- and maybe even a desktop icon. Now that the fox is no longer circling a globe, what is he wrapped around? A purple ball? Why? By contrast, this hypothetical logo in the OP post seems more logical- it's a fox head, and the ball is not a ball, but a circular background, which is a common thing for logos to have.Īlso, in the era of smartphones, tablets, and smaller PC screens (12 and 13 inch form factors seem popular- I'm sticking with my 15.6 screen or bust, but what I'm doing doesn't by itself matter), a redesign like this where the fox head is larger and more prominent relative to other elements makes sense. This makes more intuitive sense to me than the current logo.
